RESUMO

CONTEXT: Childhood and adolescence are critical periods for lifelong bone health. The impact of obesity on these phases is controversial, which may be due to the lack of standards for age-, sex-, and puberty-specific Bone turnover markers (BTMs) which could sensitively reflect bone metabolism. OBJECTIVE: To generate age-, sex, and puberty stage-specific BTMs reference curves in children and adolescents and to explore the effect of obesity on bone metabolism in the Chinese population. METHODS: Our study was part of the Evaluation and Monitoring on School-based Nutrition and Growth in Shenzhen study. 800 participants aged 6∼18 years with normal body mass index (BMI) were selected to establish BTM reference curves for boys and girls at different ages under different pubertal development stages. Additionally, 200 participants with obesity (BMI >P95th) were matched with healthy children from the original cohort at a 1:1 ratio. All participants underwent bone mineral density assessment, and serum levels of P1NP and ß-CTX were measured. RESULTS: The BTMs values presented significant age, sex, and puberty stage differences. Analysis of serum BTMs based on the established reference revealed a higher percentage of low-level P1NP in boys with obesity (P=0.005); no significant difference was observed in girls. However, the obese group showed a significantly higher proportion of high ß-CTX levels for girls, not boys (P=0.022). CONCLUSIONS: We provide age-, sex-, and puberty stage-specific P1NP and ß-CTX reference curve. According to these, obesity appeared to be a negative factor for bone formation in boys and for bone resorption in girls.

RESUMO

RNA velocity has the ability to capture the cell dynamic information in the biological processes; yet, a comprehensive analysis of the cell state transitions and their associated chemical and biological processes remains a gap. In this work, we provide the Hodge decomposition, coupled with discrete exterior calculus (DEC), to unveil cell dynamics by examining the decomposed curl-free, divergence-free, and harmonic components of the RNA velocity field in a low dimensional representation, such as a UMAP or a t-SNE representation. Decomposition results show that the decomposed components distinctly reveal key cell dynamic features such as cell cycle, bifurcation, and cell lineage differentiation, regardless of the choice of the low-dimensional representations. The consistency across different representations demonstrates that the Hodge decomposition is a reliable and robust way to extract these cell dynamic features, offering unique analysis and insightful visualization of single-cell RNA velocity fields.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Previous research has indicated that the rupture of intracranial aneurysm (IA) is a significant contributor to mortality from stroke. The objective of this present study was to examine the infiltration patterns in ruptured intracranial aneurysm (RIA), with the aim of generating insights that could inform the development of effective immunotherapeutic approaches. METHODS: To achieve this, we obtained Gene Expression Omnibus datasets pertaining to ruptured aneurysms, encompassing a total of 19 unruptured intracranial aneurysms (UIA) and 27 RIA. Subsequently, we conducted differential gene analysis and immune cell analysis specifically for the RIA. RESULTS: According to the conducted studies, the analysis has identified 10 hub genes within key modules. Through the utilization of Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway and gene ontology terms analyses, it has been established that genes exhibiting differential expression are associated with immune cell infiltration in the aneurysm wall. Furthermore, the implementation of the CIBERSORT algorithm has revealed that there are 22 distinct immune cells between RIA and tissues of UIA. IA samples contained a higher proportion of macrophages M1, mast cells resting, and CD4 naive T cells, while macrophages M0 and neutrophils were relatively lower in RIA compared with those in UIA. CONCLUSION: The current study initially identified highly conservative hub genes and immune cell infiltration patterns in IA. Data presented in the current study improved understanding of immune genes that drive IA which can be exploited in development of effective immunotherapies.

RESUMO

Background: In 2020, our center established a Tanner-Whitehouse 3 (TW3) artificial intelligence (AI) system using a convolutional neural network (CNN), which was built upon 9059 radiographs. However, the system, upon which our study is based, lacked a gold standard for comparison and had not undergone thorough evaluation in different working environments. Methods: To further verify the applicability of the AI system in clinical bone age assessment (BAA) and to enhance the accuracy and homogeneity of BAA, a prospective multi-center validation was conducted. This study utilized 744 left-hand radiographs of patients, ranging from 1 to 20 years of age, with 378 boys and 366 girls. These radiographs were obtained from nine different children's hospitals between August and December 2020. The BAAs were performed using the TW3 AI system and were also reviewed by experienced reviewers. Bone age accuracy within 1 year, root mean square error (RMSE), and mean absolute error (MAE) were statistically calculated to evaluate the accuracy. Kappa test and Bland-Altman (B-A) plot were conducted to measure the diagnostic consistency. Results: The system exhibited a high level of performance, producing results that closely aligned with those of the reviewers. It achieved a RMSE of 0.52 years and an accuracy of 94.55% for the radius, ulna, and short bones series. When assessing the carpal series of bones, the system achieved a RMSE of 0.85 years and an accuracy of 80.38%. Overall, the system displayed satisfactory accuracy and RMSE, particularly in patients over 7 years old. The system excelled in evaluating the carpal bone age of patients aged 1-6. Both the Kappa test and B-A plot demonstrated substantial consistency between the system and the reviewers, although the model encountered challenges in consistently distinguishing specific bones, such as the capitate. Furthermore, the system's performance proved acceptable across different genders and age groups, as well as radiography instruments. Conclusions: In this multi-center validation, the system showcased its potential to enhance the efficiency and consistency of healthy delivery, ultimately resulting in improved patient outcomes and reduced healthcare costs.

RESUMO

Commercialization of high energy density Lithium-Sulfur (Li-S) batteries is impeded by challenges such as polysulfide shuttling, sluggish reaction kinetics, and limited Li+ transport. Herein, a jigsaw-inspired catalyst design strategy that involves in situ assembly of coherent nano-heterocrystal ensembles (CNEs) to stabilize high-activity crystal facets, enhance electron delocalization, and reduce associated energy barriers is proposed. On the catalyst surface, the stabilized high-activity facets induce polysulfide aggregation. Simultaneously, the surrounded surface facets with enhanced activity promote Li2S deposition and Li+ diffusion, synergistically facilitating continuous and efficient sulfur redox. Experimental and DFT computations results reveal that the dual-component hetero-facet design alters the coordination of Nb atoms, enabling the redistribution of 3D orbital electrons at the Nb center and promoting d-p hybridization with sulfur. The CNE, based on energy level gradient and lattice matching, endows maximum electron transfer to catalysts and establishes smooth pathways for ion diffusion. Encouragingly, the NbN-NbC-based pouch battery delivers a Weight energy density of 357 Wh kg-1, thereby demonstrating the practical application value of CNEs. This work unveils a novel paradigm for designing high-performance catalysts, which has the potential to shape future research on electrocatalysts for energy storage applications.

RESUMO

Magnetic fluids, a new type of energy transfer fluid with tunable properties, have garnered significant interest from researchers worldwide. Hybrid magnetic fluids prepared by adding different types of nanoparticles exhibit superior thermophysical properties and functional characteristics. In this paper, we prepared a water-based magnetic fluid loaded with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MCNTs), silver (Ag), and copper (Cu) to enhance thermal conductivity. Using a transient double hot-wire method, we designed and built an experimental measurement system for the thermal conductivity of magnetic fluids with an average measurement error of less than 5%. We studied the thermal conductivity of hybrid magnetic fluids under different conditions and evaluated the advantages and disadvantages of various models, including the Maxwell model, H&C model, Tim model, Y&C model, and Evans model. Our results show that MF+MCNTs, MF+Ag, and MF+Cu nanofluids can all improve the thermal conductivity of the carrier fluid, with MF+MCNTs exhibiting the best improvement effect of 10.93%. Among the five models evaluated, the Evans model had the best predictive effect with a deviation range within 5%. This work provides theoretical and practical reference for enhancing the thermal conductivity of magnetic fluids and provides a more accurate theoretical model for calculating the thermal conductivity of hybrid magnetic fluids.

RESUMO

Endometriosis (EMT) is a prevalent gynecological disorder characterized by pain and infertility associated with the menstrual cycle. Pyroptosis, an emerging cell death mechanism, has been implicated in the pathogenesis of diverse diseases, highlighting its pivotal role in disease progression. Therefore, our study aimed to investigate the impact of pyroptosis in EMT using a comprehensive bioinformatics approach. We initially obtained two datasets from the Gene Expression Omnibus database and performed differential expression analysis to identify pyroptosis-related genes (PRGs) that were differentially expressed between EMT and non-EMT samples. Subsequently, several machine learning algorithms, namely least absolute shrinkage selection operator regression, support vector machine-recursive feature elimination, and random forest algorithms were used to identify a hub gene to construct an effective diagnostic model for EMT. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, nomogram, calibration curve, and decision curve analysis were applied to validate the performance of the model. Based on the selected hub gene, differential expression analysis between high- and low-expression groups was conducted to explore the functions and signaling pathways related to it. Additionally, the correlation between the hub gene and immune cells was investigated to gain insights into the immune microenvironment of EMT. Finally, a pyroptosis-related competing endogenous RNA network was constructed to elucidate the regulatory interactions of the hub gene. Our study revealed the potential contribution of a specific PRG to the pathogenesis of EMT, providing a novel perspective for clinical diagnosis and treatment of EMT.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To summarize the clinical features and biological characteristics of Helsmoortel Van der Aa syndrome (HVDAS) due to hotspot mutations of the ADNP gene in order to facilitate early diagnosis. METHODS: Clinical data and result of genetic testing for a girl with HVDAS due to hotspot mutation of the ADNP gene was summarized. Related literature was also reviewed. RESULTS: The patient, a 2-year-old girl, had presented with growth retardation, facial dysmorphism, psychomotor and language delay and recurrent respiratory infections. Whole exome sequencing revealed that she has harbored a heterozygous c.2496_2499delTAAA (p.Asn832Lysfs*81) variant of the ADNP gene, which was not found in either of her parents. CONCLUSION: Although the typical features of the HVDAS have included intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorders, growth retardation and premature primary tooth eruption may also be present. In addition, the phenotypic difference among individuals carrying hot spot variants of the ADNP gene was not prominent.

RESUMO

Objective: Children born small for gestational age (SGA) are at a greater risk of developing insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease in adulthood. Gastrointestinal peptides regulate glucose and lipid metabolism and act on the hypothalamus to regulate energy homeostasis. This study aimed to explore whether gastrointestinal peptides are involved in metabolic disorders in SGA, which remains unclear. Methods: We detected the secretion of glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) and peptide YY (PYY) in prepubertal children born SGA, compared the differences between catch-up growth and persistent short stature, and analyzed their correlations with glucose and lipid metabolism. GLP-1, PYY, insulin-like factor 1, glucose, insulin, and lipid concentrations were analyzed in prepubertal children aged 4-10 years in three groups: short SGA, catch-up growth SGA, and normal growth appropriate for gestational age (AGA). Results: The fasting GLP-1 and PYY concentrations were significantly lower in the SGA group than in the AGA group (p<0.05), and the GLP-1 level in infants born SGA with catch-up growth was lower than that in the short SGA group (p<0.05). In the SGA population, GLP-1 showed a weak correlation with catch-up growth (r = -0.326) and fasting insulin (r = 0.331). Conclusion: Lower GLP-1 concentrations may be associated with abnormal glucose metabolism in prepubertal children born SGA with catch-up growth. Impaired intestinal L cell function may be involved in the development of metabolic complications in SGA children.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Hypertension in children has attracted increasing attention. However, clinical-based studies investigating characteristics and secular trends of pediatric hypertension remain limited. This study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics and secular trends of different types of hypertension among hospitalized children in China. METHODS: This retrospective analysis was based on medical records from nine tertiary children's hospitals in China during 2010∼2020. A total of 5847 pediatric inpatients (aged <18 years) with the diagnosis of hypertension were enrolled. Information on the clinical characteristics of each patient was obtained from their first admission records. RESULTS: During the past decade, secondary hypertension sustained to be the dominant type of hypertension in children, with the proportion increased from 51.2% during 2010∼2015 to 59.8% during 2016∼2020. The main causes of secondary hypertension were neurologic disorders in children aged 0∼2 years, which changed to renal diseases after 3 years of age. Compared with primary hypertension, secondary hypertension was common in girls (43.1 vs. 23.3%) and children under 5 years of age (32.2 vs. 2.1%). Moreover, over four-fifths of primary hypertensive individuals had obesity and obesity-related comorbidities, and the proportion of clusters of one or more comorbidities increased in the past decade (79.7 → 85.2%). CONCLUSION: Secondary hypertension sustained to be the dominant type of hypertension among children, especially in girls. Renal diseases were the most common causes of secondary hypertension in children, followed by rheumatic immune diseases. For primary hypertension, over four-fifths of inpatients had obesity and obesity-related diseases, and the proportion kept rising.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Chromoendoscopy is an effective method for early screening of esophageal cancer, but diagnosis can depend on subjective judgment. The study aimed to explore a new technique of pixelated chromoendoscopy in the diagnosis of early esophageal cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included patients with symptoms of esophageal cancer who attended Jiangyin People's Hospital between January 2015 and July 2021. Chromoendoscopy was performed on each patient. The images then underwent digital analysis; the lesion area (the sensitive region) was pixelated by dividing it into the smallest image unit and the red, green, and blue color components. The diagnostic performance of pixelated chromoendoscopy was evaluated by calculating the area under the receiver operating characteristic. RESULTS: The study finally enrolled 86 patients (aged 51.34 ± 5.82 y), including 54 males and 32 females. Pathologic diagnosis identified 54 cases in the cancer group and 32 cases in the non-cancer group. Traditional judgment had a diagnostic sensitivity of 70.73% and specificity was 75.00%. Pixelated chromoendoscopy sensitivity was 80.49%, and specificity was 83.33%. The area under the receiver operating characteristic was 0.814, at a cutoff value of 0.625, indicating a good prediction effect. CONCLUSIONS: These results showed that pixelated chromoendoscopy might improve the rate of esophageal cancer diagnoses from early screening.

RESUMO

The integration of nano-semiconductors into electromagnetic wave absorption materials is a highly desirable strategy for intensifying dielectric polarization loss; achieving high-attenuation microwave absorption and realizing in-depth comprehension of dielectric loss mechanisms remain challenges. Herein, ultrafine oxygen vacancy-rich Nb2O5 semiconductors are confined in carbon nanosheets (ov-Nb2O5/CNS) to boost dielectric polarization and achieve high attenuation. The polarization relaxation, electromagnetic response, and impedance matching of the ov-Nb2O5/CNS are significantly facilitated by the Nb2O5 semiconductors with rich oxygen vacancies, which consequently realizes an extremely high attenuation performance of - 80.8 dB (> 99.999999% wave absorption) at 2.76 mm. As a dielectric polarization center, abundant Nb2O5-carbon heterointerfaces can intensify interfacial polarization loss to strengthen dielectric polarization, and the presence of oxygen vacancies endows Nb2O5 semiconductors with abundant charge separation sites to reinforce electric dipole polarization. Moreover, the three-dimensional reconstruction of the absorber using microcomputer tomography technology provides insight into the intensification of the unique lamellar morphology regarding multiple reflection and scattering dissipation characteristics. Additionally, ov-Nb2O5/CNS demonstrates excellent application potential by curing into a microwave-absorbing, machinable, and heat-dissipating plate. This work provides insight into the dielectric polarization loss mechanisms of nano-semiconductor/carbon composites and inspires the design of high-performance microwave absorption materials.

RESUMO

Macrophages are crucial in the progression of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). In the atherosclerotic lesions, macrophages play a central role in maintaining inflammatory response, promoting plaque development, and facilitating thrombosis. Increasing studies indicate that metabolic reprogramming and immune response mediate macrophage functional changes in all stages of atherosclerosis. In this review article, we explain how metabolic changes in glycolysis, oxidative phosphorylation, the tricarboxylic acid cycle, fatty acid synthesis, fatty acid oxidation, and cholesterol metabolism regulate macrophage function in atherosclerosis. We discuss how immune response to oxidized lipids regulate macrophage function in atherosclerosis. Additionally, we explore how abnormal metabolism leads to macrophage mitochondrial dysfunction in atherosclerosis.

RESUMO

Paclitaxel-triethylenetetramine hexaacetic acid conjugate (PTX-TTHA), a novel semi-synthetic taxane, is designed to improve the water solubility and cosolvent toxicity of paclitaxel in several aminopolycarboxylic acid groups. In this study, the in vitro and in vivo antitumor effects and mechanisms of PTX-TTHA against triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) and its intravenous toxicity were evaluated. Results showed the water solubility of PTX-TTHA was greater than 5 mg/mL, which was about 7140-fold higher than that of paclitaxel (<0.7 µg/mL). PTX-TTHA (10-105 nmol/L) could significantly inhibit breast cancer proliferation and induce apoptosis by stabilizing microtubules and arresting the cell cycle in the G2/M phase in vitro, with its therapeutic effect and mechanism similar to paclitaxel. However, when the MDA-MB-231 cell-derived xenograft (CDX) tumor model received PTX-TTHA (13.73 mg/kg) treatment once every 3 days for 21 days, the tumor inhibition rate was up to 77.32%. Furthermore, PTX-TTHA could inhibit tumor proliferation by downregulating Ki-67, and induce apoptosis by increasing pro-apoptotic proteins (Bax, cleaved caspase-3) and TdT-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) positive apoptotic cells, and reducing anti-apoptotic protein (Bcl-2). Moreover, PTX-TTHA demonstrated no sign of acute toxicity on vital organs, hematological, and biochemical parameters at the limit dose (138.6 mg/kg, i.v.). Our study indicated that PTX-TTHA showed better water solubility than paclitaxel, as well as comparable in vitro and in vivo antitumor activity in TNBC models. In addition, the antitumor mechanism of PTX-TTHA was related to microtubule regulation and apoptosis signaling pathway activation.

RESUMO

Introduction: The similarity between ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and ulcerative colitis (UC) in incidence rate and pathogenesis has been revealed. But the common pathogenesis that explains the relationship between AS and UC is still lacked, and the related genetic research is limited. We purposed to explore shared biomarkers and pathways of AS and UC through integrated bioinformatics. Methods: Gene expression data of AS and UC were obtained in the GEO database. We applied weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) to identify AS-related and UC-related co-expression gene modules. Subsequently, machine learning algorithm was used to further screen hub genes. We validated the expression level and diagnostic efficiency of the shared diagnostic gene of AS and UC in external datasets. Gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) was applied to analyze pathway-level changes between disease group and normal group. Finally, we analyzed the relationship between hub biomarker and immune microenvironment by using the CIBERSORT deconvolution algorithm. Results: 203 genes were obtained by overlapping AS-related gene module and UC-related gene module. Through SVM-RFE algorithm, 19 hub diagnostic genes were selected for AS in GSE25101 and 6 hub diagnostic genes were selected for UC in GSE94648. KCNJ15 was obtained as a common diagnostic gene of AS and UC. The expression of KCNJ15 was validated in independent datasets, and the results showed that KCNJ15 were similarly upregulated in AS samples and UC samples. Besides, ROC analysis also revealed that KCNJ15 had good diagnostic efficacy. The GSEA analysis revealed that oxidative phosphorylation pathway was the shared pathway of AS and UC. In addition, CIBERSORT results revealed the correlation between KCNJ15 gene and immune microenvironment in AS and UC. Conclusion: We have explored a common diagnostic gene KCNJ15 and a shared oxidative phosphorylation pathway of AS and UC through integrated bioinformatics, which may provide a potential diagnostic biomarker and novel insight for studying the mechanism of AS-related UC.

RESUMO

Phthalate esters (PAEs) may act as estrogen receptor agonists, and their relationship with precocious puberty is a global health concern. However, their role in isolated premature thelarche (IPT) progression remains unclear. We conducted a cohort study investigating the relationship between IPT progression and urinary PAE metabolites. Girls with IPT aged 6-8 years were regularly followed up every three months for one year. Clinical data and urine PAE metabolite levels were collected. Participants who progressed to central precocious puberty (CPP) or early puberty (EP) had significantly higher ovarian volume, breast Tanner stage, and levels of the creatinine-adjusted urinary secondary oxidized di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) metabolites (Σ4DEHP). Breast Tanner stage (odds ratio [OR] = 7.041, p = 0.010), ovarian volume (OR = 3.603, p = 0.019), and Σ4DEHP (OR = 1.020, p = 0.005) were independent risk factors for IPT progression. For each 10 µg/g/Cr increase in the urine level of Σ4DEHP, the risk of progression from IPT to CPP/EP within one year increased by 20%. This study demonstrated that the breast Tanner stage, ovarian volume, and Σ4DEHP in urine were independent risk factors for IPT progression, and Σ4DEHP may be associated with the progression of IPT to CPP or EP.

RESUMO

Magnetic fluids, as smart nanomaterials, have been successfully used in sealing applications and other fields. However, the temperature of magnetic fluids in the sealing gap is a key factor affecting sealing performances, limiting their application in high-speed sealing fields. Since obtaining a direct measurement of the magnetic fluid's temperature is difficult, due to the small clearance, accurately calculating the maximum temperature of the magnetic fluid layer in high-speed seals is crucial. Herein, a mathematical model for calculating the maximum temperature of the magnetic fluid layer was established, by using a reasonable simplification of high-speed sealing conditions, and the calculation formula was modified by studying the rheological properties of the diester-based magnetic fluid. The results suggest that the calculation of the maximum temperature is influenced by viscous dissipation, and both are related to the rheological characteristics of magnetic fluids. When the influence of rheological properties is ignored, the calculation results are not accurate for higher-velocity seals, but the calculation model applies to lower-velocity seals. When the influence of rheological properties is considered, the calculation results obtained by the corrected formula are more accurate, and they are applicable to both lower- and higher-velocity seals. This work can help us more accurately and conveniently estimate the maximum temperature of magnetic fluids in high-speed seal applications, which is of theoretical and practical research significance for determining sealing performances and thermal designs.

RESUMO

Background and objective: With a worldwide trend to earlier age of onset of puberty, the prevalence of early-onset puberty (EP) among girls has increased. The impact of EP on the pattern of linear growth and bone maturation is unclear. Accordingly, the objective of our study was to describe this pattern for girls with EP in Shenzhen, China. Methods: A total of 498 untreated girls diagnosed with EP at Shenzhen Children's Hospital, China, between January 2016 and December 2021. A total of 1,307 anthropometric measurements and 1,307 left-hand radiographs were available for analysis. Artificial intelligence (AI) was used to determine bone age (BA). Participants were classified into groups according to chronological age (CA) and BA. The pattern of linear growth (height) and progression of bone maturation was described between groups using the Lambda-Mu-Sigma (LMS) method. Published height-for-CA and height-for-BA norm references for a healthy Chinese population were used for age-appropriate comparisons. Results: The mean CA of appearance of first pubertal signs (breast buds) was 8.1 ± 0.5 years. Compared to norm-referenced data, girls with EP were significantly taller at a CA of 7-10 years. This was followed by a slowing in linear growth after a CA of 10 years, with 71 girls with EP having already achieved their target adult height. From 7 to 10 years of BA, the linear growth was slower in the EP group compared to norm-reference values. This was followed by a period of catch-up growth at 11.2 years of BA, with growth curves approaching norm-referenced values. The BA progressed rapidly from 7 to 8 years of age in about half of the girls with EP (median ΔBA/ΔCA >1.9), slowing, thereafter, until the period of catch-up growth at 11.2 years of BA. Conclusions: BA provides a more reliable reference than CA to assess growth parameters among girls with EP. Our limited data set does indicate that EP does not negatively impact final adult height. Therefore, the growth curves from our study are relevant, providing a reference for pediatricians in this clinical population and, thus, preventing over-treatment for EP.

RESUMO

CONTEXT: Age of pubertal onset has been decreasing in many countries but there have been no data on pubertal development in Chinese children over the last decade. OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of the study was to evaluate the current status of sexual maturation in Chinese children and adolescents. Secondary objectives were to examine socioeconomic, lifestyle, and auxological associations with pubertal onset. METHODS: In this national, cross-sectional, community-based health survey, a multistage, stratified cluster random sampling method was used to select a nationally representative sample, consisting of 231 575 children and adolescents (123 232 boys and 108 343 girls) between 2017 and 2019. Growth parameters and pubertal staging were assessed by physical examination. RESULTS: Compared to 10 years previously, the median age of Tanner 2 breast development and menarche were similar at 9.65 years and 12.39 years respectively. However, male puberty occurred earlier with a median age of testicular volume ≥4 mL of 10.65 years. Pubertal onset did occur earlier at the extremes, with 3.3% of the girls with breast development at 6.5-6.99 years old, increasing to 5.8% by 7.5-7.99 years old. Early pubertal onset was also noted in boys, with a testicular volume ≥ 4 mL noted in 1.5% at 7.5-7.99 years, increasing to 3.5% at 8.5-8.99 years old. Obesity and overweight increased risk of developing earlier puberty relative to normal weight in both boys and girls. CONCLUSION: Over the past decade, pubertal development is occurring earlier in Chinese children. While the cause is multifactorial, overweight and obesity are associated with earlier puberty onset.
